Johnny Mai — Software Engineering Career Intelligence

The voice behind Software Engineers — system design and Staff+ career intelligence.

Johnny Mai

Johnny Mai is a former Microsoft and Amazon engineering leader. He has shipped distributed systems at Azure scale and led engineering teams at Amazon, giving him direct visibility into how software engineers actually get evaluated, promoted, and hired at the highest levels of big tech.

His focus is system design interviews, distributed systems fundamentals, and the technical and organizational skills that separate senior engineers from Staff and Principal engineers.

Published Author

Through Valenx Education, Johnny has published The 0→1 SWE Interview Playbook, a career preparation guide covering system design frameworks, coding interview strategy, and the leveling criteria used at top tech companies.

All books are available on Amazon.

Why Software Engineers

Software Engineers exists because most system design content teaches patterns without teaching judgment. Every article here reflects real engineering leadership experience: what distinguishes a Staff+ answer from a mid-level one, and how distributed systems tradeoffs actually get evaluated in interviews and in production.

We publish frameworks built from real engineering leadership, not textbook recitations.
